Using AI as a student can be a useful tool to enhance learning. One example teachers can use AI in the classroom is for research. Students can be given a certain topic that they are learning about and students can use AI platforms such as ChatGPT for research. Students can be creative about what type of questions they ask and Chat GPT will give them a basic understanding of that topic. They can also ask Chat GPT for resources and this will encourage students to verify the sources and dig deeper into research topics.
As a teacher it is important to be mindful of how students can use AI to plagiarize their work. This is an increasing problem because students are able to ask Chat GPT to write their papers for them. Something you can do as a teacher to recognize plagiarism is to have students do in class writing assignments. If you do this at the beginning of the year, you will get to know the student’s voice and what their writing style is. Then if you assign them writing assignments later on that they have to work on at home, you will be able to compare the student’s at home writing to what they have done in class. Another thing to note is that Chat GPT can only give you big ideas and rough outlines, so if you personalize the assignment so that students have to add in their own reflections and experiences, it will be a lot harder for students to plagiarize. Another way to reduce plagiarism is to have more experiential learning instead of written assignments. If you reduce the number of essays students have to write, they won’t even be given the opportunity to use an AI platform such as Chat GPT.
